Taylor Swift is clearly thinking about her fiancé Travis Kelce, as she pays homage to him multiple times in her music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.”
The most prominent homage to the Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end, who is 36, occurs when a smiling Swift catches and throws a football while gliding down a hallway, singing the line, “Pledge allegiance to your hands, your team, your vibes.” In total, there are four affectionate references to Kelce.
Released by Swift, 35, on Sunday, October 5, the video showcases a dressing room door adorned with the number “87,” which is a reference to Kelce’s jersey number with the Chiefs.
Another tribute to Kelce, who proposed to Swift within a garden filled with flowers in August, appears when she is in the dressing room, with dancers around her wearing shining red costumes. In the background of this gathering, a black and white image of Kelce can be seen taped to the edge of a vanity mirror.
Following the release of the video, which serves as the first from Swift’s 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, fans jumped onto social media to theorize about the source of the black and white photo. According to a report from Page Six on Sunday, some speculated it was a scene from Kelce’s 2016 reality show Catching Kelce, while others thought it might be from his guest appearance in Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie in October 2024, and some believed it could come from a 2016 interview he did with AfterBuzz TV, where he expressed a desire to “kiss” Swift. (In that same interview, he also mentioned wanting to “kill” Ariana Grande and “marry” Katy Perry.)
A third lyrical reference to Kelce surfaces when Swift sings, “I heard you calling / On the megaphone / You wanna see me all alone,” which likely hints at Kelce’s unsuccessful attempt to gift Swift a friendship bracelet inscribed with his phone number during her Eras Tour prior to them officially connecting. Kelce recounted this failed gesture during a July 2023 episode of his podcast, “New Heights.”
The latest music video from Swift is abundant in glamor, beginning with her emerging from a picture before exploring various eras. Portraying a variety of characters, Swift changes into multiple outfits and hairstyles, including long black wigs and long curly red tresses.
The video wraps up with Swift reclining in a bathtub filled with water, echoing the artwork seen on the cover of The Life of a Showgirl's album.
Swift officially revealed her new album during a guest spot on “New Heights.” While sitting beside her then-boyfriend during the interview, Swift shared with Travis’ older brother and cohost Jason Kelce that she had something to "show" him.
“This is my brand new album, The Life of a Showgirl,” she declared, unveiling a mint green case adorned with her initials and pulling out her record.
She subsequently revealed the complete track listing for the album, which consists of 12 songs: “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Elizabeth Taylor,” “Opalite,” “Father Figure,” “Eldest Daughter,” “Ruin the Friendship,” “Actually Romantic,” “Wish List,” “Wood,” “Cancelled!,” “Honey,” and “The Life of a Showgirl,” featuring Sabrina Carpenter.
