Kate Winslet experienced a notable initial meeting with King Charles III.
The actress, aged 50, recounted her first encounter with the then-Prince Charles at the royal premiere of Sense and Sensibility in London back in February 1996, noting that she hadn’t considered her attire for that significant event.
“The first occasion I met him. Oh my goodness. He had come to show his support for the royal premiere of Sense and Sensibility when I was just 20,” Winslet shared during the November 18 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
“I hadn’t really grasped that we were actually going to meet him. So I completely overlooked that I was in a somewhat sheer lace outfit,” the actress elaborated. “And thankfully I had worn a coat because as he approached me, I was thinking, ‘Nipples! Nipples! Nipples! Oh my God.’ And then someone shouted, ‘Coat!’ and [I covered myself] and addressed him, ‘Your Majesty.’”
Since that instance, Winslet has interacted with the king on multiple occasions and serves as one of the ambassadors for the King’s Foundation, which is Charles’ educational charity.
The Titanic actress characterized Charles as “truly an extraordinary individual,” further stating, “He’s immensely kind, exceedingly empathetic, and very generous.”
The most recent time Winslet saw the monarch was in June of this year, when she participated in the King’s Foundation Awards ceremony held at St James’s Palace alongside David Beckham and Meryl Streep.
While conversing with host Jimmy Kimmel, Winslet reminisced about the worries concerning whether she and Streep, who is 76, needed to curtsy before the king.
“There was a discussion about this. As Meryl and I were en route to meet the king, she asked me, ‘Do you think we have to curtsy?’ I replied, ‘Absolutely, we must curtsy,’” Winslet explained. “She queried, ‘Alright, is it, like, a big curtsy? What should we do?’ I told her, ‘I have no idea. We’ll just perform the motion.’ She expressed uncertainty, saying, ‘I don’t know if we need to do that.’ There was quite a bit of concern. We were clueless about the protocol. Obviously, we were required to curtsy.”
“Did I go first? I think I did,” Winslet revealed, admitting that she took the initiative to prevent her fellow Oscar winner from feeling awkward. “But I tend to volunteer to go first, as I believe it’s important to show leadership, and someone has to make a mistake—it’s usually me who does, so I don’t mind taking the hit.”
Winslet was announced as the newest ambassador for the King’s Foundation in June.
“I am very pleased to take on the role of Ambassador for The King’s Foundation during the organization’s 35th anniversary,” she mentioned in an announcement at that moment. “I have a strong interest in finding methods to safeguard and enhance the natural environment – a shared interest with His Majesty! Consequently, I am excited to translate this enthusiasm into action through my collaboration with The King’s Foundation. I anticipate contributing to the charity’s impactful efforts to create sustainable communities and improve lives moving forward.”
