Tina Knowles, the mother of Beyoncé, is discussing how she and her daughter navigate differences in their business collaborations.
At 71, Tina partners with her 43-year-old daughter in the haircare brand, Cécred, which debuted in 2024. The matriarch acknowledges that merging family dynamics with business can be challenging at times.
"There can be challenges, particularly since you're interacting with your child, or they’re dealing with their parent, leading to differing opinions," Tina revealed on the bonus episode of Meghan Markle’s “Confessions of a Female Founder” podcast that aired on June 2.
Nonetheless, Tina, who also has daughter Solange, 38, from her previous marriage to Mathew Knowles, mentioned that she is often the one to concede during disagreements with Beyoncé. "I'm usually the one who gives in. I've been this way since I was younger. If my children are upset with me, it's difficult for me to handle, so I tend to apologize," Tina explained. "Even as grown-ups, if we have differing views or conflicts, I'm the one who reaches out because I want to minimize that separation and maintain a close relationship with my children. That’s my main concern.”
“We have our differences of opinion, but ultimately, it’s her business,” Tina added. “I assist with the business because I need to ensure that after I’m gone, beyond her career in entertainment, she will be secure. That’s a significant part of my motivation.”
“Overall, we have a really harmonious relationship. After all, it’s her business, and she deserves to prosper,” Tina remarked about their occasional disputes.
In 2024, Beyoncé and Tina rolled out Cécred, recognized particularly for its popular revitalizing hair drops. Tina mentioned that it required “some persuasion” to get Beyoncé on board with the idea. "This has been a lifelong ambition of mine. For Beyoncé, it’s also been a dream she’s had, and we’ve discussed it repeatedly over the years," Tina shared. "Initially, she was not keen on starting another business since she dedicated her earlier years to perfecting her craft as a singer."
Tina went on to say, “It required a bit of convincing. I told her, ‘I will take the lead on this, and we can work through it together.’ Eventually, she agreed to embark on this journey. I didn't want to take this on alone; being 70 now, I’m not keen on the idea of working too hard.”
Even though there might be occasional disagreements regarding their business partnership, Tina expressed that Beyoncé places a great deal of trust in her, considering her mother’s extensive experience in salon ownership.
"I have complete faith in her. She is an incredibly astute entrepreneur. Her knowledge about hair is extensive. There is mutual trust between us," Tina shared with Meghan. "There are times when I express, 'I want to create this office, include a test salon in the back, and incorporate a laboratory.' Everyone else is usually quick to say, 'That space isn't suitable for such plans.' She’ll reassure me by saying, 'I know you have a solid grasp of what you’re doing.'"
"In a gathering of advisors, the consensus was, 'I don’t believe that's a feasible idea.' Yet, she confidently asserted, 'My mom is capable of handling this.' Therefore, she places her trust in my judgment, and I reciprocate that trust," Tina recounted.
