Danielle Fishel's discussion with former Boy Meets World co-star Maitland Ward took a dramatic shift as they revisited their ongoing conflict.
The tension escalated during the episode of the “Pod Meets World” podcast that aired on Monday, February 23, when Fishel, aged 43, posed a question to Ward, 48: “Do you hate us?” Ward responded, “No, I don’t hate you. I believe you hate me because you wouldn’t talk to me on Girl Meets World, and that was painful.”
Fishel seemed taken aback by this assertion, saying, “I wouldn’t talk to you? I did communicate with you.”
As they revisited the disagreement, Ward alleged that Fishel had unfollowed her on Facebook, which Fishel contested. Years ago, Ward had sent a message to Fishel to congratulate her on her engagement to her now ex-husband, Tim Belusko, but Fishel didn’t discover the message until years later. Fishel is currently married to Jensen Karp, with whom she has two sons, Adler, 5, and Keaton, 3.
“I’m not very active on Facebook,” Fishel mentioned. “I later logged into my Facebook account, noticed that we weren’t friends. I couldn’t recall when we became friends or when we stopped being friends. I found your message buried among old messages, and I felt really sorry.”
Fishel shared that she attempted to contact Ward through Will Friedle after finding the message but was advised to postpone their conversation for the podcast episode where Ward was set to appear.
“I asked Will, ‘Can you please ask Maitland for her phone number so I can apologize to her?’” Fishel revealed. “And your reply to Will was, ‘No, let’s just save it for the podcast; it will be great for the ratings.’”
Ward denied suggesting that discussing it would enhance their ratings, stating she believed the conversation would take place “immediately.” While reflecting on their past, Ward recalled that she had invited Fishel to her wedding in 2006, which Fishel thought was unexpected. After the wedding, the two did not connect again.
Years later, they met again on the set of Girl Meets World, and Ward expressed being “genuinely confused” about the rift in her relationship with Fishel. (The Boy Meets World spinoff, Girl Meets World, aired on Disney from 2014 to 2017.)
“There was some tension between us, and I didn’t understand it. Perhaps I misinterpreted the signals, but there was definitely some kind of awkwardness,” Ward explained, adding that she “did not know” what might have gone amiss in her friendship with Fishel. “I wasn’t sure if you thought I was trying to come onto the set and take over. Not take over, but try to capture attention or something. But I had no clue.”
Fishel remarked that she didn’t feel like she was “not good” with Ward and indicated that the environment on the set of Girl Meets World was quite “tumultuous.” Fishel claimed she felt “very ostracized” before extending an apology to Ward.
“I regret that you believed I had any personal animosity toward you,” Fishel expressed, to which Ward responded, “Look, you weren’t pleased with the attention I was receiving at that moment, and the fact that I was distancing myself, pulling that attention away from you.”
Fishel countered, “In 2014, I was featured on the cover of Maxim.”
The two began exchanging views regarding Ward's perception that Fishel held resentment towards her. “I regret that you thought this was about you,” Fishel commented.
Before finding a resolution, Fishel accused Ward of making critical remarks about their rewatch podcast to TMZ, something Ward countered by saying the publication approaches her on the street. “Are you implying that I’m exploiting you, or is there something else you’re suggesting?” Ward inquired.
Ward asserted that there exists a “divide” because “you dislike Ben [Savage] and you both dislike [series creator] Michael [Jacobs],” a claim the hosts denied, stating they felt no animosity towards either individual. Friedle stated, “Ben is among the most significant people I’ve ever encountered, and it frustrates me that he refuses to communicate with us. That’s the situation; he does not talk to us.” Friedle further alleged, “During a chat with Ben, he just cut off the conversation abruptly.”
Ward accused the hosts of “interrogating” her during the interview, later alleging, “Let’s be real about this; you’re coming at me now because of the ratings and because it generates interest.” Fishel replied, “No Maitland, it’s not me who is seeking to boost ratings.”
In spite of the tension, the discussion between Fishel and Ward concluded on a more tranquil note. “It was nice to look back,” Fishel reflected. “To share some good memories, as well as some less favorable ones.”
