Joe, 36, responded to the rumors during a conversation with Esquire that was published on Monday, October 20, stating, “I’ve never used cocaine in my life. But if I did, I believe I'd handle it more discreetly than doing it onstage.”
Footage captured by fans from Joe's performance in September at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles depicted him looking at his reflection and wiping his nose. As this video made its rounds online, many speculated whether he might be using cocaine. Joe later commented on the clip humorously, saying, “lol you never had a booger?”
In his discussion with Esquire, Joe also touched on his impending divorce from British actress Sophie Turner after five years of marriage. The former couple has two daughters, Willa, 5, and Delphine, 3. Last month, Joe traveled to London to accompany them on their first days of school, according to the publication.
Regarding his personal life, Joe mentioned that his concert tour, which includes his brothers Kevin, 37, and Nick, 33, complicates his ability to date.
“Having five consecutive shows does not exactly facilitate meeting someone for coffee,” the self-identified “extremely online” artist shared with the publication, adding, “I guess Instagram and TikTok are applications, and I’ve met people through those platforms.”
When asked about his thoughts on ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift’s latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, Joe replied, “I’ve listened to some of it. Clearly, she’s the biggest artist out there, and I think it’s quite good. Everyone has opinions about it, but from what I’ve heard, there are some catchy melodies.”
In August, Joe reconnected with another well-known ex, Demi Lovato, who helped launch the JONAS20: Greetings from Your Hometown Tour at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Joe and Lovato, 33, performed their duet “Wouldn’t Change a Thing,” which featured in the 2010 Camp Rock sequel on Disney Channel.
The pair portrayed romantic characters Mitchie and Shane in the movie, which also led to a real-life relationship years earlier.
“I really got to know her and understood the struggles she faced,” Joe shared with Vulture in 2013, referring to Lovato's challenges with substance abuse. “I felt this obligation to care for her, but simultaneously, I was living a lie, feeling unhappy while believing I had to stay in the situation because she needed assistance. Of course, I couldn’t communicate any of that because I had to safeguard my brand.”
Recently, Joe contemplated his early fame and the media scrutiny surrounding the purity rings worn by him and his brothers as a commitment to wait until marriage.
“We were notably recognized for these purity rings, which were common in our church community where people our age, around 10 or 11, were doing the same. We decided to wait for the right person,” Joe explained on Penn Badgley’s “Podcrushed” podcast in July.
He remarked, “During an interview — when you’re around 15 or 16 — someone might bring it up, and you feel like saying, ‘I prefer not to discuss this,’ but then they respond, ‘I’m going to document that you all are part of a cult.’”
