The reality television personality, aged 37, revealed the information through a series of clips on her Instagram Stories on Sunday, October 12, detailing her reasons for not attending the funeral that occurred that same day.

Throughout the nine seasons of RHOP, Ashley has shared that she was raised entirely by her mother, Sheila Matthews, and that she was unfamiliar with her father, who she claimed abandoned her when she was just a year old. In an episode from season 4, she attempted to reach out to him, but he declined to meet.

"While I was in New York last week, my mom let me know that my father had passed away," Ashley said in the first of four videos shared on Sunday.

"Today was his funeral, and I thought about going, mainly for my own sense of closure. However, after so much travel, I wanted to spend this weekend with my kids," Ashley mentioned, who has sons Dean, 6, and Dylan, 4, with her ex-husband Michael Darby.

"My thinking was, why would I take time away from my children for someone who never found time for me?” Ashley elaborated. “I discovered I have siblings, and many things I didn’t know about my father were revealed to me in his obituary. I read that he enjoyed gardening, taught himself guitar, and was a passionate fisherman — quite a few of the same things I love to do."

Ashley continued, “The obituary mentioned that his greatest achievement was being a dad to his two sons. That struck a chord with me. It’s curious how you can experience grief and a unique form of mourning for someone with whom you had no relationship, isn't it? Just a blood tie but no emotional bond. That’s quite fascinating.”

The original RHOP cast member expressed that she had hoped her father might get in touch before he passed away. She mentioned learning that he had recently entered hospice care due to cancer that had spread throughout his body.

"What I've ultimately concluded from this part of my life at 37 is that I’m really learning to shut that door," she reflected. "A door that was never opened and never will be. I’ve always held onto some hope that maybe, when my dad was in hospice before he died, he’d have a moment of clarity and want to make amends. It’s just surreal."

"I truly can’t grasp how a person could not want to love their children or be incapable of loving a child. It is what it is. Life will definitely continue," Ashley stated.

In the following video, Ashley recounted a peculiar incident at her house that occurred prior to receiving the news of her father’s passing.

"I'm pretty superstitious, as you all know. On the day I was set to head to New York, a flock of black crows was flying around my home, all gathered in my yard," she remarked. "I snapped some photos of it since it was a bit unsettling to me."
