As reported by Entertainment Weekly, a petition has been initiated on Change.org advocating for the replacement of Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny with country music icon George Strait. Launched by an individual known as “Kar Shell,” the petition has garnered over 50,000 signatures and urges the NFL to remove the 31-year-old artist from the upcoming 2026 Halftime Show — historically the most viewed event on television — and substitute him with the 73-year-old Strait, who is affectionately referred to as the “King of Country Music” by his fans.
The petition expresses dissatisfaction, stating that the Halftime Show has increasingly favored contemporary pop and international performers. While this trend may indeed expand the viewership, it is crucial to acknowledge the foundational elements that have shaped American music.
Earlier this month, Bad Bunny responded to the criticism during his hosting stint on Saturday Night Live, noting in his monologue, “You might not know this, but I'm set to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. I'm thrilled about it, and I believe everyone else is as well! Even Fox News…”
He continued: “Honestly, I am genuinely excited to participate in the Super Bowl. I know many people globally who enjoy my music are thrilled too.”
After briefly conversing in Spanish, he joked, “If you didn’t catch what I said, you have four months to learn!”
Lopez, 56, expressed her confidence that Bad Bunny will astonish everyone during the Super Bowl performance, stating, “It’s a chance for some people to be introduced to him.”
When asked if she had heard any criticism directed at him before host Craig Melvin brought it up, she replied, “I honestly don’t know. Why? I can’t grasp that. He’s one of the top musicians globally right now, probably the very best.”
When Melvin, 46, noted that certain critics believe a different performer should take the stage for the football event, Lopez remarked, “It could be so many different people. That’s the point. I’m incredibly excited for people to witness his performance. I think they will be pleasantly surprised because his music transcends language. What he has accomplished is remarkable — he’s done what many will never achieve in their lifetime.”
On the day that Lopez appeared on the NBC morning program, President Donald Trump criticized Bad Bunny and the NFL during an interview with Newsmax.
“I had never heard of him,” he stated. “I have no idea who he is or the reasoning behind this, it’s absurd, and they attribute it to some promoter they hired for entertainment, which I find utterly ridiculous.”
The following day, Bad Bunny was seen seated behind home plate at Yankee Stadium, enjoying the game between the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays.
In the second inning, a foul ball soared into the air and dropped directly into his lap. He grinned and held up the ball, eliciting cheers from the audience.
One fan on X noted the remarkable moment, tweeting, “Even the baseballs want to collaborate with him now 😎🎤.”
