Audra McDonald is addressing an overly enthusiastic fan who trailed her home following a Broadway show.
The 55-year-old actress, known for her role in The Gilded Age, shared information about the frightening incident in an Instagram video labeled as a “PSA” on Saturday, August 16. She recounted that the event occurred the previous evening after she exited the Majestic Theatre in New York City, where she had performed as Mama Rose in Gypsy.
McDonald mentioned that the audience member "snuck around and located me as I left the theater and followed me all the way to my residence, entered the building, and got uncomfortably close. And when I eventually managed to get some security involved, their reaction was, ‘Well, hey, I’ve come all the way…’ and they wanted an autograph, feeling entitled to one."
"That crosses a significant boundary. I wish to underscore that. That’s a firm no. It now involves my safety, and that’s unacceptable," the Tony Award winner stated.
While McDonald occasionally meets fans at the stage door, she has opted against it during her performance run in Gypsy to “conserve energy” for the subsequent shows.
"Actors, as much as we adore meeting each of you after a performance, there are times when we are just too drained, and it becomes challenging. There are countless reasons," the actress elaborated.
She went on to say, "There are many factors discouraging performers from doing the stage door. I’ve both engaged and not engaged in it for various shows. Some reasons include exhaustion, anxiety about the interaction, being in a hurry to catch trains back home, or health considerations that lead people to avoid the stage door."
McDonald wrapped up her video by urging fans to honor performers' boundaries and their privacy following shows.
"When you notice an actor leaving the stage door and they don’t stop, please respect their space. Their choice not to stop has nothing to do with you," she emphasized. "It’s about them safeguarding their own space and peace. If they do stop to wave, take a picture, or sign an autograph, that’s wonderful. But please honor the appropriate boundaries."
McDonald completed her noteworthy run in Gypsy on Sunday, August 17. The production debuted in December and was performed over 260 times.
