Debby Ryan paid a poignant homage to Jeff Baena on what would have marked the 48th birthday of the screenwriter and director.
On June 29, Ryan, aged 32, turned to Instagram to remember her friend, who was the late spouse of Aubrey Plaza, and shared a collection of memories highlighting their friendship.
"Happy birthday Jeff ✨ Please bear with me, as I am not accustomed to grieving publicly and find it challenging to express delicate emotions to unfamiliar faces. Yet, I have thought about him every day for the last six months," Ryan, who starred in Baena's projects, 2020's Horse Girl and 2022's Spin Me Round, penned. "Earlier this year, I lost a beloved friend, valued collaborator, and mentor in Jeff Baena. The loss has felt incredibly heavy, and many others also mourn him, as he was truly the heart of this entire Jeff universe."
The images she shared depicted moments spent with Ryan and her musician spouse, Josh Dun, alongside notable personalities like Ayden Mayeri, Matthew Gray Gubler, Fred Armisen, and Zach Woods.
Ryan included a tag for Alison Brie, who co-wrote both Horse Girl and Spin Me Round with Baena, in the last image of the collection. The photo highlighted Baena engaged in various projects and sharing relaxing moments with his friends.
Ryan's caption went on, "On his birthday today, I want to share a few insights about Jeff— he was kind-hearted. Affectionate yet firm in his beliefs. Thoughtful in a laid-back manner. Often correct about things that were beyond our comprehension. Full of spirit during discussions. His standards for excellence were rooted in the quality of the ingredients— much like his chosen casts. He had an eclectic mix of talent and narratives, and it formed a genuine treasure trove."
She also contemplated the personal and professional influence Baena had on her. "He believed in me, and I take pride in that," Ryan expressed. "Jeff was an exceptional individual who afforded me the respect of introducing myself, acknowledging me as I am. And I valued his perception of me. Just as true friendship fosters self-love, meaningful collaboration allows you to realize your best potential."
The tribute concluded with an emotional note in the comments section, which Ryan added shortly after the initial carousel was posted.
“Half a year spent attempting to comprehend this, fluctuating between deep sorrow and yearning for acceptance, making efforts to navigate towards more positive emotions — striving to adjust to a reality that is now in the past. Working to forgive myself for not being able to save my friend. Seeking to find it in my heart to forgive my friend for taking my friend,” Ryan shared. “Six months filled with events that Jeff will never be aware of, which is quite astonishing. Half a year spent coming to terms with the new reality of the plans we would have created together. Months filled with revelations of what he left behind; and the gifts he continues to provide for me and those who were touched by his light. Grateful for everything, Jeff. Love you, man. ✨ And happy birthday.”
