Lachey, 51, typically refrains from discussing his ex-wife or the popular MTV reality series they appeared in during the early 2000s. However, in a recent interview with “Richer Lives,” the singer and host of Love Is Blind shared some infrequent insights about his experience on the show.

“Newlyweds ended up being a very significant reality program,” Lachey remarked. “Before it, The Osbournes was the only show of its kind, which was also incredibly successful. But that series was designed primarily to promote music.”

When they opted to participate in Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, which aired from 2003 to 2005, Lachey and Simpson, now 44, factored in their music careers.

“At that time, my ex-wife was releasing an album, and I had an album coming out as well, so I thought a little six-episode series could help promote our albums,” Lachey detailed about his mindset back then. “We had no clue it would evolve into this unexpected reality, fly-on-the-wall type of show.”

Newlyweds offered viewers an irresistible look into the couple's life, showcasing Lachey as the composed straight man and Simpson as the charmingly goofy comedic figure.

“You become quite accustomed to [being observed],” Lachey reflected. “Initially, they advised us, ‘Don’t interact with the crew; they’re just there to observe!’ I told them, ‘If this is going to work, that’s not how I operate. You can’t be in my home, monitor everything I do, and we won’t engage.’ So, I really began to appreciate the crew. I remember being emotional on the last day of filming; you forge connections with them and they really felt like family.”

After Lachey and Simpson divorced in 2006, just a year post the final season of Newlyweds, he looks back on the experience with gratitude for sharing his private life publicly.

“The wonderful aspect of reality TV is that when you’re part of a boy band, people only recognize you as Nick from 98 Degrees, particularly a largely female demographic,” Lachey stated. “Reality TV enabled me to present myself as Nick Lachey, the individual, to the audience, and even the guys around me were thinking, ‘He seems pretty cool. I’d grab a beer with him.’ ... It helped me to feel very at ease being myself.”

Lachey also mentioned that he was fairly compensated during the show’s trajectory, adding, “I have no grievances.”

Post his separation from Simpson, Lachey encountered his current wife, Vanessa Lachey (née Minnillo), in 2006 while filming his music video “What’s Left of Me,” and they wed in 2011. Together, they are parents to sons Camden, 12, and Phoenix, 8, and daughter Brooklyn, 10, and cohost the Netflix reality series Love Is Blind and The Ultimatum.

"I believe the charm of [Love Is Blind] lies in the uncertainty of who will develop romantic feelings for one another, as it's impossible to predict who will form those genuine connections showcased on the program," Lachey shared exclusively earlier this month. "There have been a few surprises for me along the way. I often find myself thinking, ‘I can’t believe that happened.’ Fortunately, we have experienced a significant rate of success. Throughout eight amazing seasons, there have been merely two divorces."
