Former Disney Channel actor Ryan McCartan is providing insight into the minimal residual payments he receives from the network.
On May 26, McCartan, 31, took to his Instagram Story to disclose that he was set to receive only 41 cents for his contributions to the series Liv and Maddie, which aired between 2013 and 2017. He portrayed the character Diggie Smalls during the entirety of the show's four-year duration.
“When asked how well Disney Channel pays,” McCartan humorously remarked on social media, sharing a screenshot of the payment notification.
Following the conclusion of Liv and Maddie, he made his Broadway debut as Fiyero in Wicked and performed in various musicals such as South Pacific, Frozen, and West Side Story. Since January, he has been performing as Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby in the theater district of New York City.
“Gatsby feels so adult,” he remarked in a recent interview with PIX 11 News. “And I’m thinking, ‘I’m not a grown man. I’m just a kid from Minnesota. They will likely choose someone more refined and intricate — not me. Then I receive the call and think, ‘This must be a mix-up. Am I the right choice?’”
Like numerous actors working in the industry, McCartan receives residual payments whenever a show he participated in is rerun. This income has been essential for individuals struggling to pay their bills while looking for new opportunities.
“Ours is a capricious industry, and during my over 20 years as a performer, my career has had its ups and downs,” Mandy Moore shared on Instagram in the summer of 2023 when the SAG-AFTRA acting union initiated its four-month strike due to a labor disagreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The This Is Us star remarked then, “There have been very lean years for me when jobs were scarce, and those were the moments in the past when actors relied on residuals from former work to help sustain themselves.”
As streaming services attract audiences away from conventional television, the amounts from actors’ residual checks have drastically diminished. A major point of contention during the SAG-AFTRA strike was the producers' unwillingness to negotiate better terms for these residual payments during contract discussions.
Robert Carradine, another Disney Channel alum, has also experienced low residuals. At 71, Carradine, who played Hilary Duff’s father on the popular show Lizzie McGuire, once received a residual payment in August 2019 totaling $0.
Davida Williams, known for her role as cheerleader Claire Miller on Lizzie McGuire, disclosed in March 2023 that she often receives an amount of $3.50 or less. Likewise, Jake Thomas, who portrayed Lizzie’s little brother Matt, recently reflected: “In the past, I would take a large stack of residual checks to the bank every month. This enormous stack would often total… $8.”
