Scott Adams, the creator and artist behind the Dilbert comic strip, disclosed that he has terminal prostate cancer.
On Monday, May 19, Adams, 67, made this announcement during a YouTube livestream, expressing his condolences towards former President Joe Biden, who revealed his own prostate cancer diagnosis the day prior, on May 18.
"I have the same type of cancer that Joe Biden has. I also have prostate cancer that has metastasized to my bones," Adams stated. "Thus, my life expectancy might be as short as this summer. I anticipate departing from this world sometime this summer."
Adams elaborated on the effects of his cancer diagnosis on his life. "The illness is already unbearable," he remarked. "I can affirm that I do not experience good days. If you're asking, 'Hey Scott, do you have any good days?' The answer is no. Each day is a nightmare, and the evenings are even worse."
"I'm constantly in discomfort," he elaborated, noting that he relies on a walker for mobility. "The pain shifts around to different areas of my body."
He remarked, "It's essentially unbearable."
Adams mentioned that while the diagnosis is "old news" to him, he recognized that his supporters may be taken aback by the news of his cancer for the first time. "I've kind of processed it," he shared. "It is simply what it is. I must say that everyone has to face death, as far as I understand. It’s somewhat civilized to be aware of how much time you have left, enabling you to organize your affairs, say your farewells, and accomplish all the necessary tasks."
"If you had to select a way to pass, this one is intensely painful—truly excruciating—but it is somewhat beneficial that it affords you enough time while your mind is still functioning to tie up loose ends," he added.
Adams' widely recognized Dilbert comic strip, launched in 1989, was featured in numerous newspapers, including The Washington Post. It was discontinued in April 2023 after the cartoonist's contentious remarks regarding race on his YouTube channel.
On Sunday, Biden's office announced that the former president had been identified with an "aggressive" variant of prostate cancer. "Last week, President Joe Biden underwent evaluation for a newly detected prostate nodule following an increase in urinary symptoms," a statement outlined. "On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which had a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) and had metastasized to the bone."
"Although this indicates a more aggressive form of the illness, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which facilitates effective management," the statement added.
Biden and his family, including his wife Dr. Jill Biden, are currently "exploring treatment options with his medical team."
