Angelina Jolie became emotional during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival while reflecting on her late mother.

During a question and answer segment at the premiere of Jolie’s latest film Couture on Sunday, September 7, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, the 50-year-old actress gave a heartfelt reply when asked for guidance “for anyone who has recently lost someone to cancer.” (In Couture, Jolie portrays a character battling cancer, and she also experienced the loss of her mother, Marcia Lynne Bertrand, to cancer in 2007.)

Jolie took a moment to collect herself, covering her mouth with her hand as she gathered her thoughts before responding. “I’m so sorry for your loss,” Jolie began, starting to wipe away tears. “One thing I remember my mother saying when she was diagnosed… we had a dinner where people were curious about her… and she said, ‘All people ever ask me about is cancer.’”

As she continued to pat at her eyes, Jolie added, “I suggest that if you know someone facing challenges, you should also inquire about the other aspects of their life. They are a complete individual. And they are still living.”

The audience reportedly applauded Jolie’s openness at that moment before the discussion about the film shifted.

Jolie’s remarks regarding her mother’s passing at the age of 56 came following her tribute to the late actress while receiving the Maltin Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February.

At that event, she shared with the audience, “I think of my mother… she had to forego her aspirations of a creative life but she fully embraced mine.”

Additionally, during her acceptance speech, Jolie expressed that her mother, who passed away after a decade-long fight against breast and ovarian cancer, used to write letters to the characters Jolie brought to life on screen. “Dear Gia,’ ‘Dear Lisa Rowe,’ ‘Dear Lara Croft’ — and for the last 16 years, I haven’t had those letters,” Jolie recounted. (Jolie starred in the lead role of the 1998 TV film Gia, the following year played Lisa Rowe in Girl, Interrupted, and later took on the role of video game icon Lara Croft in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.)

In Couture, Jolie takes on the role of a filmmaker named Maxine who travels to Fashion Week in Paris to direct a television show, only to discover her cancer diagnosis.

The release date for Couture in the United States has not yet been confirmed.
