Taylor Swift is set to release more music, having disclosed the title of her forthcoming 12th studio album.
The singer announced that her new record will be named The Life of a Showgirl during a preview on boyfriend Travis Kelce's “New Heights” podcast on Tuesday, August 12, and shared a brief look at the new album cover art.
“I wanted to show you something,” Swift, 35, said to Travis, also 35, and his brother, Jason Kelce, who cohosts the podcast. She then revealed a case featuring her initials in bright orange lettering. Upon opening it, she presented her new album, which was obscured in the video, and informed the brothers, “This is my brand new album, The Life of a Showgirl.”
The podcast episode is set to be released on Wednesday, August 13, where it appears Swift will provide additional insights about her upcoming album.
At 12:12 a.m., Swift also refreshed her official website, replacing the countdown timer that had been prominent on the site for several hours before her big reveal. The new visuals show a vinyl record, cassette, and CD with a poster, all adorned with a shimmering orange lock. Additionally, Swift changed her social media profile images to display this same orange lock against a green backdrop.
The website indicates that a release date is still pending, but all preorders will be dispatched before October 13. The definitive cover art has yet to be disclosed.
After Swift released The Tortured Poets Department in April 2024, fans began analyzing what they interpreted as hints regarding TS12. In May 2024, she incorporated her 11th album into her Eras Tour setlist, but that was not the only modification attendees observed. The tour's updated logo, which previously showcased Midnights in three squares while every other album occupied just one, now featured The Tortured Poets Department occupying two squares, with Midnights relegated to one square. Fans theorized that by the tour's conclusion, each album would be represented in a single square, suggesting that TS12 would finalize the arrangement.
This theory gained traction amidst a recurring “3, 2, 1” countdown from Swift. Her website deliberately malfunctioned with a notice prior to her announcement regarding The Tortured Poets Department's release date, and she consistently held up two fingers throughout its promotion. While some speculated this indicated that The Tortured Poets Department was a secret double album, Swift resumed showing two fingers again when her tour commenced after the album's launch.
Starting in May 2024, Swift also debuted a variety of new orange outfits for her tour ensembles. Alongside her iconic orange bodysuit and blazer from Lover, as well as her acoustic segment dress, she sported mismatched bustiers and skirts from 1989 in several colors, including orange. During the 12th performance since the new 1989 design was introduced, she coordinated her top and bottom for the first time, donning a completely orange outfit. These hints led Swifties to theorize that orange would be the central color theme for her 12th album.
This hypothesis gained momentum when Swift's marketing team, Taylor Nation, uploaded a series of photos on Instagram on Monday, August 11, showcasing the artist in orange bodysuits. The post included the caption, "Thinking about when she said ‘See you next era…’ ❤️🔥."
Remarkably, the images were shared just 12 minutes following a teaser from the “New Heights” podcast about a surprise guest set to join them in the Wednesday episode. This enigmatic guest was later identified as Swift.
Shortly after the Taylor Nation update, a countdown clock appeared on Swift's official website, counting down to 12:12 a.m. ET on Tuesday, seemingly signaling the imminent arrival of a new era. The backdrop of this countdown was adorned in a bright orange hue.
Swift has been prolific in her music releases recently, with Lover debuting in 2019, followed by Folklore and Evermore in 2020, Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) in 2021, Midnights in 2022, and both Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in 2023, culminating with The Tortured Poets Department expected in 2024. When she announced her intention to tour in 2022 for the first time in nearly five years, she hinted at a plan to incorporate all her albums into the setlist, which she indeed fulfilled during the launch of the Eras Tour in March 2023.
While some fans expressed hopes that Swift might extend the tour beyond December 2024, she affirmed at her 100th show in June 2024 that the tour would conclude at that time. “People have been like, ‘How are you going to celebrate the 100th show?’” she shared with the crowd in Liverpool, England. “The celebration of the 100th show for me means this is the very first time I’ve acknowledged to myself and admitted that this tour is going to end in December. Like, that’s it.”
Swift reflected on the tour experience as “the most exhausting, all-encompassing, but most joyful, most rewarding, most wonderful thing that has ever happened in my life.”
“I think that this tour has really become my entire life,” she continued. “It’s taken over everything. I think I once had hobbies, but I don’t know what they were anymore. All I do when I’m not on stage is sit at home and try to think of clever acoustic song mashups and think about what you might want to hear.”
