Moriah Plath is candidly discussing her experience with alopecia.
The star of Welcome to Plathville shared two images on Instagram on Monday, July 7; one features her wearing a hat, while the other shows a scarf wrapped around her head.
“I’m reluctant to reveal this as it feels vulnerable and personal for me,” Plath, 22, expressed in her caption. “I’ve faced criticism about my appearance for a long time. I’ve gotten used to being analyzed for my style, hair, and makeup choices since I was a child... Many of those critiques were valid, as I often look back and think, wow, Moriah, you were a bit wild, haha! But that’s just part of life, and the best takeaway is to enjoy yourself and not be too hard on your younger self.”
She shared that she has “dealt with alopecia for nearly my entire life” and noted that “most of the time, it has been manageable.” However, she disclosed, “a few months back, I lost all of my hair, including my eyebrows and eyelashes, again. It was incredibly tough and emotional, and I had to accept it. I cried a lot but ultimately told myself, it is what it is. I’ll do what I can and make the best of it.”
Plath went on to say, “I’m not very skilled at wearing wigs yet, and trying to draw on my eyebrows every day can be frustrating, lol. I’m still getting the hang of it, haha! So, if I look a little unusual or different, that’s likely the reason 🙈 I’m trying to find moments to laugh and allow myself to cry when needed while embracing it.”
She mentioned, “I’ve been sticking with the same black wig because I wasn’t ready for all the questions, but it is what it is now.”
Plath stated that she has “never undergone any cosmetic procedures, other than Invisalign. I’m working on loving myself as God made me, with or without hair.”
So far, she shared, “it’s an ongoing battle,” admitting, “but I’m making progress!”
She wrapped up her post on a hopeful note, reflecting, “our imperfections and insecurities are actually some of the most beautiful aspects of who we are!”
In response to criticism regarding her looks, Plath reminded her followers that “you never know what someone is facing and should aim to speak life and positivity, as they likely are harder on themselves than you could ever be [on them]!”
Previously, she discussed her condition during the sixth season of the TLC reality series showcasing her Christian Fundamentalist family. Following a recent breakup, Plath noticed her hair beginning to fall out.
“I would comb my hair, and suddenly it was just, like, [gone],” she recounted in a September 2024 episode, tearfully telling her mother, Kim Plath, about her desire to shave off what little hair remained.
She went on to share that at the age of 3 or 4, she experienced complete hair loss. "It began to fall away, and I didn't see it return until I turned 8," she remembered. "Over these past few months, I have recognized that, for me, emotional pain seems to provoke my alopecia. I believe it serves as a visible sign of my internal struggles."
