Sean “Diddy” Combs was met with applause from fellow inmates following his acquittal on three of the five charges in his recent federal trial, according to his attorney.
In a Sunday, July 6 interview with the Associated Press, Diddy's lawyer Marc Agnifilo shared that the rapper received a standing ovation upon his return to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, after the verdict was announced on Wednesday, July 2. (Diddy has been in custody at this facility since his initial arrest in September 2024.)
The 55-year-old rapper was found not guilty of three of the more severe allegations against him, which included two counts of sex trafficking and one count of racketeering conspiracy last week. Had he been convicted, he could have faced a life sentence.
He was, however, convicted on two counts related to transportation for the purpose of prostitution, with a potential sentence of up to 20 years, minus any time already served. Legal analysts suggest he will likely serve a significantly shorter duration than the maximum allowable sentence. Sentencing is anticipated on October 3.
“They all mentioned that they never see anyone who is able to defeat the government,” Agnifilo reported to the AP.
He continued with remarks indicating, “I told them, ‘Perhaps it's meant for you to be the person who triumphs.’ They need a testimony that someone can emerge victorious. I believe he appreciated that perspective.”
Agnifilo also provided insight into Diddy’s well-being following the verdict announcement. “He’s managing,” he informed the media outlet.
Agnifilo indicated that Diddy is keen on self-improvement during his anticipated time post-release. He mentioned that Diddy is likely to re-engage with a domestic violence program he began prior to his September arrest. (In May 2024, footage surfaced showing him assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie in a hotel corridor in 2016.)
Agnifilo remarked that the “Bad Boy for Life” artist acknowledges his shortcomings just like anyone else. “He is passionate in every aspect. I believe he has come to recognize his imperfections and that neither fame nor wealth can eliminate them,” he stated. “You cannot hide them.”
One juror from Diddy’s trial recently expressed that the rapper's celebrity had minimal influence on their choice to acquit him of three of the five charges. The juror found any assumptions to the contrary to be “extremely insulting and diminishing to the jury and the deliberation process.”
“We deliberated for more than two days,” the unnamed juror disclosed in a statement to ABC News on Thursday, July 3. “Our verdict was entirely founded on the evidence presented and the applicable law.”
“We would have conducted ourselves in the same way with any defendant, irrespective of their identity. I have no further comments,” the juror added.
Diddy has entered a plea of not guilty to all five charges and continues to assert his innocence.
“We are disheartened by the choice to initiate what we consider an unfair prosecution of Mr. Combs by the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Agnifilo stated following his arrest last year. “He may have flaws, but he is not a criminal. Importantly, Mr. Combs has shown complete cooperation throughout this investigation and he willingly moved to New York last week in preparation for these charges. We urge you to withhold your judgment until you possess all the facts. These actions reflect those of an innocent individual who has nothing to conceal, and he is eager to vindicate himself in court.”
