Michael Douglas may be closing the chapter on his acting career following almost six decades in the film industry.
The 80-year-old Oscar recipient expressed that he has “no genuine plans” to star in any new projects unless a particularly compelling script captures his interest.
“I intentionally stopped working since 2022 because I recognized it was time for a break,” Douglas noted during a press conference on Sunday, July 6, at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, as reported by Variety.
“I’ve dedicated around 60 years to this career, and I didn’t want to be one of those individuals who passes away while on set. I don’t have any real desire to return. I’m not calling it retirement because if something extraordinary comes along, I would consider it, but otherwise, I’m not,” he elaborated.
The Wall Street actor shared that he is satisfied with his professional journey and gave an affectionate mention to his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, who is 55.
Douglas mentioned he is currently “seeking a good script” for “a small independent movie,” yet stated that, for the purpose of preserving a happy marriage, he is “pleased to support” the Chicago star in her endeavors moving forward.
The couple, who wed in 2000, are parents to two children: son Dylan, 24, and daughter Carys, 22. Douglas is also the father of Cameron, 46, from his previous marriage to Diandra Luker.
As the son of renowned actor Kirk Douglas and actress Diana Dill, Douglas began his acting career in the late 1960s, following in the footsteps of his famous lineage. His significant breakthrough came with the CBS television play The Experiment.
Over the years, he has established a distinguished reputation, appearing in significant films like Wall Street, Basic Instinct, and Fatal Attraction among others. Douglas's performance as Gordon Gekko in Wall Street garnered him the Best Actor Oscar in 1988, and he also received an Oscar for Best Picture for his role as producer of the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
More recently, he has received acclaim for his performances as Liberace in Behind the Candelabra, in the Netflix series The Kominsky Method, and within Marvel’s Ant-Man franchise. His latest appearances were in the 2023 blockbuster Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the upcoming 2024 Apple TV+ miniseries Franklin, where he portrays Benjamin Franklin.
During the press event, Douglas also discussed his 2010 diagnosis of oral cancer and explained his decision against surgery.
“Stage four cancer is no picnic, but there aren’t many options available, are there?” he remarked. “I chose to follow the treatment plan that included chemotherapy and radiation, and I was fortunate. The surgical option would have led to losing my ability to speak and removing part of my jaw, which would have been a limitation for my acting career.”
