Sydney Sweeney made waves last year when she posted images from the filming of her upcoming Christy Martin biopic, and she is now disclosing how she prepared to step into that character.

"I loved the experience," Sweeney, 27, mentioned in an interview with W magazine that was published on Monday, June 9. She explained that she added over 30 pounds in order to portray Martin, who is now 56 years old. "I joined the project to play Christy and underwent approximately three and a half months of training. I began eating more. I weight-trained for an hour each morning, engaged in kickboxing for around two hours in the afternoon, and then did another hour of weight training in the evening."

Sweeney remarked that her “body had completely transformed” following the rigorous training. "None of my clothes fit anymore. Typically, I wear a size 23 in jeans, but I was fitting into a size 27. My chest got larger. And my backside increased significantly. It was unbelievable! I couldn’t believe it,” she exclaimed.

Even with all these alterations, Sweeney embraced her new physique. "It felt incredible," she expressed to the publication. "I was so strong, like ridiculously strong."

Once filming concluded on the still-untitled Martin project, Sweeney had a mere seven weeks to shed the weight for her subsequent role. Director David Mîchod was amazed by the shift in his leading actress, particularly because he had not previously seen her in Euphoria.

"I was taken aback by the transformation in her looks," he shared with W. "I had only known her as this charming and tough character with late-’80s hair, prepared to box. Sydney was at her happiest when she was in the ring, throwing punches and receiving them. It was astonishing to witness her so glamorous."

The film will depict Martin’s life story, illustrating her rise to become one of America’s most notable female boxers. Her journey began in 1989 when she met her manager and eventual husband, James Martin. Martin went on to secure the World Boxing female super welterweight title in 2009 and continued her boxing career until 2012.

In 2010, Christy faced near-fatal consequences following an assault by James. He was apprehended and charged with attempted first-degree murder along with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Two years later, he was convicted of attempted second-degree murder and is currently serving a 25-year prison term.

Christy made history as the first female boxer inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016. She was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020, which marked the first year women were featured on the ballot.

According to Mîchod, Sweeney fully embraced the role of Christy in the upcoming film, which is set for release later this year.

"Sydney worked extremely hard to prepare for the character," he stated to W. "The remarkable thing about Sydney is that she showed up to work each day with enthusiasm, eager to start. No matter how challenging it was, she radiated positivity.”
