Tom Felton, known for his role in Harry Potter, is sharing his perspective on returning to the franchise amidst author J.K. Rowling's contentious opinions regarding transgender rights.

At 37 years old, Felton is prepared to bring back his character, Draco Malfoy, a role he first played in the film series that spanned from 2001 to 2011, in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

In an interview with Variety during the 2025 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 8, Felton mentioned that he is “not really that attuned” to the ongoing debate surrounding Rowling, who is 59, and has faced criticism in recent years for her stance on the transgender community.

When asked if this controversy influenced his choice to return to his iconic character, Felton expressed that it “can’t say it does.” He continued, saying, “The only thing I always remind myself is that I’ve been fortunate enough to travel the world — here I am in New York — and I’ve seen nothing bring people together like [Harry] Potter. And she’s the one behind that, so I feel incredibly thankful.”

Previously, fellow Harry Potter stars like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have publicly supported transgender individuals and their rights, which clashes with Rowling's views. Grint, for instance, stated to Us Weekly in June 2020, “I firmly stand with the trans community. Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment.”

Felton is poised to become the first actor from the Harry Potter films to reprise his original role for Cursed Child, a sequel that occurs nearly two decades after the last movie.

“It’s very much a pinch-me situation. I keep thinking I’m dreaming,” he shared with Today’s Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin on Thursday, June 5. “I left that character behind 16 years ago, and now I have the opportunity to revisit him as a father in a new storyline. I get to encounter Draco as an adult, which is incredibly thrilling.”

“It’s such an immense part of my childhood. It feels like going back to high school or something similar. I’ve been really eager to share this announcement. I’ve had to keep it secret for quite some time,” Felton added.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child made its first appearance in London's West End in 2016 before moving to Broadway in 2018. The play centers on the bond between Albus, the son of Harry and Ginny Weasley, and Scorpius, the son of Draco, during their time at Hogwarts. The two Slytherin friends embark on a quest to change one of Harry’s pivotal moments — the death of Cedric Diggory.
