Sharing a harrowing experience through a TikTok video posted last week, Dominique Elissa recounted how she had been in the midst of organizing a wellness retreat at a secluded location in northern New South Wales when an unfortunate incident occurred.
“I’m in the wilderness, there’s not a single neighbor for 200 meters, there’s no phone signal,” Elissa, 29, mentioned in the clip, highlighting the absence of cellular service. She shared that she had been enjoying the outdoor sauna the previous evening and had turned it on to warm up before going outside.
“I’m just about to put on my swimsuit to head out … when I suddenly hear this ‘Boom.’ I look up, and the whole sauna exploded,” the social media influencer narrated to the camera. “It was an explosion that reached heights of around 10 to 15 meters. The power went out completely, my phone was nearly dead, I had no signal, and I’m screaming, ‘Help, somebody help me.’ It felt like a scene from a horror film.”
Fortunately, the influencer, who also teaches pilates, managed to reach out to local emergency services despite the lack of cell service. “Thank God, I was literally shaking, I could hardly breathe,” she reflected. “Three fire trucks arrived to extinguish the massive flames. Luckily, the sauna was situated about 50 meters away from the house up on a hill. The entire sauna was reduced to ashes. It was one of the most terrifying experiences, especially knowing I was just minutes away from entering that sauna.”
Despite the ordeal, Elissa found the strength to proceed with the wellness workshop the following day, although she admitted to battling with “shaking from anxiety.”
At the end of her video, she contemplated the incident and expressed, “I’m so thankful to be alive, so thankful to still be here. I’m definitely going to consult a therapist … seek some help, but what I want to share as a life lesson is that life is delicate, and you can never predict the challenges that it will present to you.”
She acknowledged that, in the days following the retreat, she took it easy, noting to her followers, “It’s about how you respond that truly matters.”
Elissa, who also hosts a podcast, has garnered over 73,000 followers on TikTok and 284,000 on Instagram. Many of her followers responded on TikTok with compassion and inquiries about the sauna brand. “Oh my gosh, that’s so terrifying! Can you please reveal the sauna brand if possible? I was considering buying one for my home, but this now raises my concerns,” one follower commented.
Another wrote, “[Please] share the sauna type? Was it infrared or rocks? Any additional information about the sauna would help me avoid it! This is really scary now.”
