Scarlett Johansson Reacts to ‘Vulgar’ Vagina Joke on ‘SNL’: ‘It Was So Gross’

The actress from Jurassic World Rebirth, who is 40 years old, found herself the subject of a crude joke exchanged between her husband, Colin Jost, and his “Weekend Update” co-host, Michael Che, during their annual joke exchange in December 2024. Jost read a joke penned for him by Che, which stated, “Costco has taken the roast beef sandwich off its menu. I’ve been having roast beef every night since my wife had the baby.” Johansson, who was backstage at the time, was captured on camera and appeared taken aback by the humor.

In an interview with InStyle released on Tuesday, March 11, Johansson expressed, “It was extremely vulgar. I couldn't believe they went there. I thought — it was really gross. It was quite unpleasant and reminiscent of old-school vulgarity.”

Despite her initial shock, Johansson found the moment to be humorous. “My reaction to it was just so funny,” she told the publication, mentioning that she had been informed in advance that Che had crafted a joke about her for Jost to deliver. Johansson added, “I thought, ‘It’s a joke about a vagina, how terrible can it be?’ But as soon as the Costco image appeared, I realized, ‘No! No, Michael!’”

Johansson remarked on how intense it became with the reveal, feeling like it was akin to a dramatic scene from To Catch a Predator. “All of a sudden, there were several people holding lights and a man with a video camera, waiting for my reaction. It felt surreal. I thought I might faint,” she recounted.

Johansson noted that both she and Jost, who is 42, were still in disbelief when they crawled into bed at 4 a.m. after the show. “I mentioned, ‘My nerves are completely shot,’ and Colin replied, ‘Same here,’” she shared.

Jost had previously acknowledged that his wife was genuinely taken aback by the risqué humor. “I was surprised by everything, but they did give her some notice,” Jost stated during a January 20 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “They mentioned, ‘Would you be comfortable if Michael made a somewhat risqué kind of vagina joke at some point?’”

Johansson was reportedly “open to it,” according to her husband. However, the punchline turned out to be quite unexpected for both of them. “I didn’t see where it was headed, and then the graphic appeared for Arby’s,” Jost recalled. “Scarlett was backstage, exclaiming, ‘Oh my God, is that what it is?’”

When host Jimmy Fallon inquired if Jost faced any “trouble” with his wife, he replied, “I suspect I’m in trouble, not just with her but with many others as well.”

Jost and Johansson first crossed paths at a Saturday Night Live afterparty in May 2017. They tied the knot in October 2020 and welcomed their son Cosmo in August 2021. Johansson also has a daughter named Rose, who is 10 years old, from her previous marriage to Romain Dauriac.
