Candiace Dillard Bassett, a former cast member of The Real Housewives of Potomac, reached out to Karen Huger before her ex-costar began her prison term last month.
Dillard Bassett, aged 38, recently mentioned to People that she had spoken with Huger, who is 61, “a few times before she went away,” in reference to Huger’s sentencing on February 26, pertaining to a DUI offense in 2024.
“I’m clearly heartbroken for her and her family,” the new mother stated. “It’s well known that drinking and driving is unacceptable. Each of us has the chance to make choices, and it's our responsibility to make wise decisions, whether that involves calling an Uber, staying on a couch, walking, or any other option.”
“Karen will surely have time to reflect on her actions, but I look forward to her serving her sentence and emerging stronger, which I truly believe she will,” said the singer known for her role in “Insecure.”
Dillard Bassett was part of the RHOP cast from seasons 3 through 8. She revealed her exit from the series in March 2024, ahead of season 9.
Last month, Huger was given a two-year jail sentence, with one year suspended, meaning she will spend one year in prison. She was instructed to report directly to law enforcement.
The sentencing followed a previous charge against the Bravo star, who is recognized as the “Grand Dame” of Potomac, for DUI, DWI, and reckless driving after a car accident in March 2024. In December 2024, she was found guilty on nearly all charges, with the exception of the reckless driving count.
“While we are disappointed with the jury’s verdict, we certainly respect their decision and appreciate the time they dedicated to our case,” stated Huger’s attorney, A. Scott Bolden, in a message to People at that time. “We continue to assert Mrs. Huger’s right to appeal and intend to seek justice on her behalf. We are grateful for the support and prayers directed toward Mrs. Huger and her family at this moment.”
Gizelle Bryant, a founding member of RHOP, recently revealed that she and her fellow cast members have been reaching out to Huger’s husband, Ray, who is 79, since Huger’s sentencing.
“I’ve connected with Ray. He’s keeping a close circle of people who will be in touch with Karen. For now, I’m not part of that circle,” noted Bryant, 54, during the March 5 episode of SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live. “However, he is open.”
“All the women are really concerned about Ray,” Bryant continued. “I did suggest to him, ‘We want to begin sending you food weekly. We can take turns.’ He mentioned feeling overwhelmed with food, so he said no, thank you. He knows we’re here to provide support in whatever way we can.”
