“I wouldn't want to be a Faithful because it seems like they have to remain longer and sacrifice more sleep,” Sam, 30, shared exclusively with Us Weekly regarding the popular Peacock show. “So I wouldn't want to suffer from even more sleep deprivation than I already did.”
Reflecting on his challenging adjustment to living in Scotland, he added, “The sun sets at 1:00 AM there anyway, so I definitely aimed to get more sleep.”
After joining the show's third season, which debuted in January, Sam started off as somewhat of a watcher before eventually joining the conversation. His ideas — particularly his coffin theory — caught the attention of the Traitors, leading to his character’s elimination on the episode that aired on Thursday, February 20, as he was considered a threat.
“I enjoyed myself. It was great. I didn’t want to become that person who was so focused on winning the game that I’d eliminate anyone in my path,” he expressed to Us. “That wasn’t going to be my approach. I wanted to contribute, reveal my true self, and make some friends.”
Sam recognized that his choice to hold back initially was a part of his strategy. “I didn’t want to reach the finale without saying anything. I aimed to use that to my benefit, leveraging my appearance and the way others perceived me,” he explained. “I wanted them to think I was naive and clueless, only to surprise them when I made it to the end. There was a bit of strategy involved and applying some life experiences to it. So it worked out well.”
Even though he didn’t make it to the final stages, Sam appreciated the game and the chance to disconnect. (Contestants typically have limited access to electronics and the outside world while filming The Traitors overseas.)
“That was a nice experience — being unplugged. I won’t say I necessary needed it, but I believe everyone could benefit from it. We are so reliant on our phones and when you return — as long as everything is taken care of — you're not really missing anything,” Sam stated. “I don’t have children, and the other individuals in my life are grown, so I didn’t have any responsibilities. It was a good opportunity to step away from everything and really concentrate on the game.” Now, Sam can watch the remainder of the season as a viewer, and he has plenty of thoughts about it. The actor discussed Danielle Reyes’ questionable tactics as a Traitor following her involvement in his elimination alongside Carolyn Wiger.
“She should not be trembling or shedding tears. In acting, the most effective way to cry is when you manage to hold back your tears,” he shared with Us regarding the guidance he would provide to Danielle. “You sort of retreat within yourself. It's an intimate moment, and she wasn’t accomplishing that. Instead, she was doing quite the opposite, which renders [her] a poor actor.”
He continued: “She was weeping for recognition and exuding Traitor [vibes] all season long. The timing just wasn’t right for us to engage with her, but I commend her for being competitive and putting in her best effort.”
New episodes of The Traitors premiere every Thursday on Peacock.
