Rachel Maddow has expressed her support for her MSNBC colleague, Joy Reid.
Maddow, who is 51 years old, spoke about the conclusion of Reid's program, The ReidOut, which aired its last episode on Monday, February 24, during her own broadcasting, The Rachel Maddow Show, that same evening.
On Monday, MSNBC confirmed that Reid, aged 56, would be departing the network soon after rumors circulated over the weekend regarding the cancellation of her political commentary show after a five-year run.
“Tonight marked the end of Joy Reid’s show, The ReidOut. Joy will not be transitioning to a different role within the network; instead, she is leaving entirely, and that is extremely difficult to accept,” Maddow shared on her program Monday, according to Variety.
“I am 51 years old. Since the age of 12, I have held various jobs throughout my life—more than you could imagine. Yet, among all my experiences, no one has earned my affection and respect as much as Joy Reid,” Maddow stated.
The commentator added, “I admire her in every way. I have gained so much knowledge from her and recognize that there is still much I have to learn. Personally, I feel that losing her as a colleague at MSNBC is a significant mistake.”
Maddow also pointed out additional alterations in MSNBC's programming, specifically mentioning the cancellation of weekend anchor Katie Phang’s timeslot. She remarked that it was “indefensible” for the network to let go of “two non-white hosts in primetime.”
Rebecca Kutler, the president of MSNBC, confirmed Reid’s exit in an internal memo that was obtained by the Associated Press on Monday. “Joy Reid is leaving the network, and we express our gratitude for her countless contributions throughout the years,” Kutler wrote, as reported by the outlet.
In a post on Bluesky on Monday, Reid expressed her gratitude to supporters following the unsettling news about the cancellation of her show. “I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who has shown me kindness and support, both personally and on social media. I feel immensely proud of The ReidOut team, who feel like family to me, as well as all our supporters and friends. See you tomorrow night at 7 for one last time,” she wrote.
During a livestream on the “Win With Black Women” YouTube channel on Sunday, February 23, a visibly emotional Reid stated, “My show held significance.”
Reid stood firm in her commitment to addressing challenging topics. “My show held significance,” she said, according to the Associated Press. “Whether it involved Black Lives Matter issues … or discussing Gaza and affirming that we as Americans have … the right to protest against innocent children being harmed … I refuse to apologize for standing up for these truths.”
