"I have previously collaborated with Tim on a film, and I can attest to his wonderful nature. He excels in his craft so much that it often feels effortless, only to suddenly reveal its brilliance. In a phone call with Michelle Nader, she outlined her vision for the sitcom and how to keep it feeling innovative, which is quite a challenge," she remembered. "We all appreciate a great sitcom, but creating one in the current landscape of streaming and social media has become difficult, especially since the best sitcoms were established before these changes."
Elfman elaborated that she recognized the uniqueness of Shifting Gears from the outset, stating, "I truly admire the format. I have been eager to work on a project like this, yet I was uncertain if it could be executed in a fresh or innovative way. However, Michelle and the entire cast and crew are excelling—it’s impressive. She aimed to present a new perspective on what defines a strong woman. Her vision strongly resonated with me. It felt familiar and comfortable."
She added, "I appreciated her perspective on how to portray the family at the heart of the series, particularly regarding the cultural, political, and emotional generational gaps. Although it is a sitcom, it is anchored by skilled actors who understand both performance and comedic timing. The writing also reinforces this talent. Everything felt just right for me to join in, and I’m incredibly glad I did because I had such a wonderful experience. We wrapped up filming the last episode last night, and it's fantastic."
Shifting Gears is scheduled to be broadcast on ABC every Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
