‘Breaking Bad’ Cast Remembers RJ Mitte: Inside the Heartfelt Messages from Costars After His Death

‘Breaking Bad’ Cast Members Pay Tribute to Costar and Disability Advocate RJ Mitte After His Death at Age 34

Former cast members of the critically acclaimed drama series Breaking Bad—including stars Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, and Dean Norris—have shared tributes honoring the life and career of actor and disability rights advocate RJ Mitte, following confirmation of his death on Monday, October 12, 2026. He was 34 years old.

A spokesperson for Mitte confirmed his passing by suicide to Us Weekly earlier in the day. The actor, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age 3, drew directly from his personal experiences living with the condition to portray Walter "Flynn" White Jr. across all five seasons of the AMC series.

"It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte," his spokesperson said in an official statement.

Beyond his work as an actor, Mitte spent years leveraging his public visibility to champion representation for individuals with physical disabilities across the media landscape. He acted as a ambassador for both Shriners Children's and United Cerebral Palsy, and served as president of The Mitte Foundation, an organization focused on supporting charitable efforts and local community programs.

"Beyond entertaining friends and family around the world, he served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s," his representative added. "He also served as president of The Mitte Foundation, supporting philanthropic efforts and community initiatives, while using his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote greater representation for people with disabilities."

His spokesperson concluded the official announcement by requesting that the public "respect the privacy of RJ Mitte’s family and close ones" during this time.

Bryan Cranston Reflects on Mitte’s Growth and Potential

Following the announcement, several of Mitte’s former castmates publicly reflected on their time working alongside him on set. Bryan Cranston, who played Mitte’s onscreen father Walter White Sr., posted a lengthy statement on Instagram expressing deep despair over the news.

Cranston recalled first meeting Mitte in February 2007 during the filming of the series pilot, when Mitte was 14 years old. The seven-time Emmy winner noted that despite the physical demands of the production schedule, Mitte approached his work with consistent enthusiasm and focus.

"I met him when he was only 14 years old when he was cast as Walter White Jr., a part he played with such joy and enthusiasm," Cranston wrote. "Born with Cerebral Palsy, he never — ever — allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything. He met the demanding shooting schedule head on with great determination."

Cranston shared that Mitte was attentive to guidance from senior actors on set, while occasionally choosing to navigate challenges independently. He noted how the young performer developed over time into a accomplished actor who subsequently utilized his platform to campaign for performers with disabilities.

"He was one of the stars of a hit TV show — but still a kid," Cranston stated. "That kid was pretty raw when we started shooting the pilot in February of 2007, but little by little we watched him grow into a really fine actor. He parlayed his experience on the show to be a vocal advocate for performers with disabilities, and was the head of a philanthropic organization with a focus on helping the disabled community. All that promise and potential now is such a loss."

The actor noted the sudden loss was especially painful, revealing that he and Mitte had been in communication shortly before his death.

"We were texting each other just a few weeks ago — figuring out when we could meet for lunch. I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future… But I do know that I loved him, and thoroughly enjoyed being with him throughout the years on the series, and after the spotlight on Breaking Bad dimmed… I’ll miss you, son," Cranston shared.

Costars Aaron Paul and Dean Norris Express Heartbreak

Aaron Paul, who portrayed Jesse Pinkman on the series, spoke about the personal connection he formed with Mitte during their years working together on the show. In a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter on October 12, Paul expressed sadness over the news and offered words of support to those reading.

"I am at a loss. I am heartbroken over this news," Paul stated. "RJ, I love you my friend. You will be missed. And to whoever happens to be reading this, please know you are loved, and you are not alone. Always remember that."

Dean Norris, who played Hank Schrader—the uncle of Mitte’s character on Breaking Bad—also addressed the news publicly on Monday through a post on social media.

"Oh my God! Was working just found out about RJ I am heartbroken," Norris posted on X (formerly Twitter). "Though RJ didn’t play my TV son, I always looked out for him as a young kid on set. He was a sweetheart of a young man and will be greatly missed."

Norris added, "This is so heartbreaking, I can’t believe it. Thinking of him and his family."
