Kacey Musgraves Responds to Kristi Noem’s Social Media Criticism With Reference to Controversial Dog-Shooting Admission

Kacey Musgraves Fires Back at Kristi Noem's Social Media Remark With Reference to Memoir Controversy

Country music performer Kacey Musgraves issued a sharp response on social media following targeted comments from political figure Kristi Noem regarding a recent concert appearance.

The exchange began on Monday, October 12, when Noem took to the platform X to weigh in on a post shared by Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico. Talarico had posted photographs documenting his attendance at one of Musgraves' live performances.

"I’ll take @ellalangleymsic over Kacey Musgraves any day," Noem wrote on X, referencing singer Ella Langley. In the same message, Noem added a comment about the ongoing political landscape in Texas, stating, "And if I’m choosin’ Texas, I’ll take Ken Paxton over James Talarico." The latter remark pointed to Talarico’s electoral opponent, Republican state attorney general Ken Paxton.

Rather than letting the public preference go unanswered, Musgraves later reposted Noem's message alongside a direct comeback.

"I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it," Musgraves clapped back.

Context Behind the Viral Social Media Exchange

Musgraves' reply directly invoked Noem's highly publicized revelation from her 2024 memoir, No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong With Politics and How We Move America Forward. In the book, Noem disclosed that she once shot and killed her 14-month-old wirehaired pointer dog named Cricket, describing the animal as "less than worthless" and untrainable as a hunting companion.

"It was not a pleasant job, but it had to be done. And after it was over, I realized another unpleasant job needed to be done," Noem wrote in the publication, where she also acknowledged killing a farm goat in a similar manner.

The admission drew widespread backlash when it first surfaced. Noem attempted to defend her actions in an April 2024 post on X, writing, "We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm. Sadly, we just had to put down 3 horses a few weeks ago that had been in our family for 25 years."

Public and Media Repercussions Over the Memoir Excerpt

The account of the dog's death sparked immediate condemnation across media outlets and daytime television programs, notably during a heated segment on the ABC talk show The View.

"Give it back, bitch!" cohost Whoopi Goldberg remarked on the program in April 2024. "Give it back! How you gonna kill it?"

Goldberg added further criticism, warning against animal behavior, while fellow panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin expressed sharp disapproval of the handling of a young animal.

"This is a puppy," Griffin noted during the broadcast. "If your dog is acting wrongly, it is because you are incompetent at training that dog. When I grew up, we had big dogs and we had chickens. A dog did once get a chicken. Whose fault was it? Mine, for not having the dog somewhere where he couldn’t get the chickens."

Griffin further argued that alternative solutions, such as rehoming challenging pets through specialized organizations, should always take precedence over fatal measures, concluding her thoughts by demanding justice for the dog. Fellow cohost Sunny Hostin also weighed in on the panel, offering a blunt assessment of the behavior described in the memoir by stating that such actions are frequently viewed as warning signs.
