Gwyneth Paltrow defends one of her most talked-about Goop product innovations — the 'This Smells Like My Vagina' candle.
In a discussion at the 2025 Mindvalley Manifesting Summit in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 17, Paltrow responded to inquiries regarding the product, which debuted on her lifestyle platform in 2020, and the criticism it received.
“You know, that product is incredibly intriguing,” the 52-year-old actress stated, as seen in an Instagram clip shared by the summit’s official account on Sunday, May 18. “It took us quite a while to move past that one, but I kept it available on the site due to its connection to women’s sexuality. We are often conditioned to experience a lot of shame. I found this punk rock concept really appealing.”
Paltrow concluded with, “We are beautiful and we are fantastic, so go f*** yourself.”
The candle gave rise to a 2022 spinoff titled “Hands Off My Vagina,” which references reproductive freedom, and was initially created to empower the female audience of the website.
In a September 2020 interview with Us Weekly, Paltrow remarked, “Growing up, you received messaging about feminine care that was saturated with synthetic fragrances and all sorts of things. I felt it was essential to assert a feminist statement about embracing our true selves and our femininity.”
She added, “I believe that once individuals move past the initial surprise of it and start to explore its meaning, it’s actually quite remarkable.”
During the weekend's discussion, Paltrow also reflected on the product's inception, sharing with attendees, “We were experimenting with various scents one day, and I caught a whiff of something and thought, ‘Oh, that smells like…’ you know,” she explained.
“I was just joking. Then Douglas Little, the perfumer from Heretic and a Goop collaborator, said, ‘Oh, we should create that as a candle and put it up on the site,’” Paltrow continued.
Paltrow has consistently challenged societal norms, recently sharing that her two children, daughter Apple, 21, and son Moses, 19, appreciate their unconventional upbringing. (She shares both children with ex-husband Chris Martin and married Brad Falchuk in 2018.)
“My kids are really proud of the nonconformist approach we’ve taken over the years,” Paltrow told E! News in a piece released on Monday, May 12. “In hindsight, there have always been topics we wrote about [at Goop] that garnered reactions like, ‘Oh my goodness, what is this?’ Now, so much of that is very mainstream. My children take pride in the fact that we’ve often been pioneers in this area.”
