Selena Gomez’s Mom Responds to Investor Who Suggested Giving Birth to Star Is Her Sole Accomplishment

Mandy Teefey, Selena Gomez's mother, is responding after an investor reportedly belittled her accomplishments with a comment.

Teefey, 48, took to Instagram on Monday, March 10, to describe her experience in a business meeting where the male investor implied that her most significant achievement was giving birth to Gomez, 32.

“Hello, all my female entrepreneurs! Here’s a quick lesson: If anyone attempts to undermine you, even if you have an established success record, be gentle with yourself and let it drive you forward,” Teefey stated at the start of her post, alongside a nostalgic image of her cradling Gomez as a newborn.

“Securing funds for your aspirations can drain you and instill unwarranted uncertainty. I have invested my entire being into everything, particularly into Wondermind. I face obstacles for various reasons, but this instance actually made me chuckle,” she elaborated.

Teefey recounted, “I presented our pitch successfully, standing out as the only woman in the room. The investor rambled on about other contributors and then looked at me to say, ‘And Mandy, you gave birth to Selena.’ I paused for a second and laughed while replying, ‘Yes, indeed I did, along with [Gomez’s sister] Gracie, [13] Reasons Why, and Wondermind. And I must point out that those are more significant achievements than simply being charming.’”

“‘I’m a mother, a CEO, and a co-founder of a company aimed at improving people’s lives,’” she continued. “Don’t try to shame me or downplay the role of motherhood. I’m quite content with my life’s outcome. I hope he finds happiness in his life and learns to respect others instead of trying to bolster his courage through insults. He really missed the target on that one.”

Teefey welcomed Gomez into the world when she was just 16 and initially managed her daughter's early career. Since then, she has collaborated with Gomez on executive producing Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why through her production company, Kicked to the Curb, and co-founded the mental health organization Wondermind alongside her daughter.

“We envision being the comprehensive resource for all facets of mental fitness. We have taken a surprising and innovative approach to how individuals can comprehend and engage in a creative foundation that demonstrates the possibility of change,” Teefey expressed in an April 2022 press release introducing Wondermind. “Far from being clinical or didactic, we've achieved a harmony between education, media, and self-examination that genuinely encourages personal growth.”

“Every individual has their own unique mental health journey. If we overlook, romanticize, or conceal them from society, it doesn’t alter the fact that the experience is profoundly real,” Gomez added. “Wondermind is broadening the conversation on mental health that began for countless people during this pandemic.”
