Selena Gomez Reveals the ‘Same’ Meal Steve Martin and Martin Short Always Eat on ‘Only Murders’ Set

Steve Martin and Martin Short’s ever-particular dietary habits have started rubbing off on their Only Murders in the Building costar Selena Gomez.

“I sit there and read the news with them every day … and they eat the same thing every day,” Gomez, 32, quipped during her and fiancé Benny Blanco’s Thursday, March 20, appearance on Hot Ones. “And now, I eat the same thing every day.”

Martin, 79, and Short, 74, will rotate between either a tuna sandwich with Dijon mustard or a sushi platter between Only Murders takes, according to the pop star.

“And now, all I eat is a chicken salad sandwich,” Gomez said. “For some reason, I’m excited to eat my meal next to theirs. I feel like my lingo is [fitting for an old soul], sometimes I’ll say, ‘Yes, no and I remember whilst I was.’ It’s, like, what am I talking about? That’s just Steve and Marty. They’re the best.”

Gomez has bonded with the two Saturday Night Live veterans since they were all cast in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building in 2021. On the show, which is currently filming season 5, the unlikely trio team up to investigate a series of mysterious deaths in their New York City neighborhood.

“You get a list of names, you know, you’re thinking, Sure, they’d be good, they’d be good, and then they say, ‘What about Selena Gomez?’ and it’s just — yes, of course. There was no question except ‘Can we get her?’” Martin recalled to Vogue in 2021. “We knew she would enhance the show in so many ways, the number one being talent. Her performance is rich and adult. She’s learned to underplay when necessary.”

He added, “Marty and I are pretty manic, and she’s this solid, solid rock foundation. She’s nicely, intensely low-key. She’s just working. And Marty and I joke around constantly, and we weren’t sure if she’d be game for it. But now we think of ourselves as the Three Musketeers.”

Both Martin and Short were also delighted when Gomez got engaged to record producer Blanco, 37, in December 2024.

“Steve made sure he sent my assistant an email so my assistant could tell me congratulations,” Gomez said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in January. “That’s how he communicates. He always tries to be polite. And it’s very kind, but it’s OK to send a little text.”

At the time, host Jimmy Kimmel pitched both Martin and Short to serve as ring bearers at Gomez’s wedding.

“That would be adorable,” Gomez gushed, while Short couldn’t stop twisting her marquise-shaped diamond ring.
