Abigail Spencer was excited to take part in her friend Meghan Markle’s With Love, Meghan series—although she didn’t expect to dive into the cooking aspect of it.
“It was hilarious when she informed me she would be teaching me how to cook fish. ‘Excuse me, you’re going to do what?’” Spencer, 43, shared with Hello! in an interview released on Wednesday, March 19. “I had no idea where anything was located in that kitchen. I felt like I was just floating along, while she was performing impressive strokes!”
She quipped, “Meghan is about to earn a gold medal and I’m just trying to stay afloat!”
Meghan, 43, expressed her passion for cooking, gardening, DIY projects, and various lifestyle themes in her With Love docuseries that debuted on Netflix earlier this month. Spencer and their mutual friend Kelly McKee Zafjen made an appearance in a pivotal episode.
“Kelly is an excellent cook, [but] Abby has her own talents!” Meghan playfully mentioned during the scene, later joking that Spencer was “the morale booster” on Suits. (While Meghan portrayed paralegal-turned-attorney Rachel Zane in the legal drama, Spencer had a recurring role as the lawyer Dana “Scottie” Scott.)
Reflecting on her With Love appearance during her conversation with Hello!, Spencer admitted she couldn’t stop laughing at Meghan’s honesty.
“I genuinely found it hilarious when she mentioned, ‘Kelly and Abigail are coming over,’ and added, ‘You know how great of a cook Kelly is, and Abby has other strengths,’” Spencer recounted. “That is absolutely true! [My strengths] tend to be more along the lines of ‘I’ll serve you champagne while you cook.’”
The two women had established their friendship well before Meghan became the Duchess of Sussex after marrying Prince Harry in 2018. Their first encounter took place in an audition room in 2007, and they grew closer while both were part of USA Network’s Suits.
“We maintain a very personal friendship,” Spencer explained to Hello! on Wednesday. “So allowing others a glimpse into that is...quite private, but I’m pleased we could share a bit of it.”
Following the success of With Love, Netflix has already announced a second season. Spencer, in the meantime, has enjoyed watching her friend shine on screen while providing top-notch hosting advice.
“Viewers will get a genuine view of the woman that I cherish and know,” Spencer told People in January. “Additionally, there’s so much to learn.”
The Timeless alum expressed that she was simply “extremely grateful” to join in and learn new culinary skills from Meghan.
