Selena Gomez Almost Didn’t Show up to Benny Blanco’s Proposal Because She Was ‘Grumpy’

Selena Gomez was completely taken by surprise by Benny Blanco’s marriage proposal — so much so that she nearly missed the moment entirely.

The pair, who became engaged in December 2024, shared during their appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, March 20, that Gomez was in such a “grumpy” mood that she almost opted out of seeing Blanco the day he intended to propose.

“We had a lot of promotional work for the album to do,” Gomez, 32, recounted. “I woke up feeling quite disoriented about what was going on and where we were headed, because it seemed rather distant. So, I was feeling a bit grumpy. I was tired… I said, ‘Once we finish this shoot, I’m just going to chill with my friends.’ He then responded, ‘Okay, sure. We’ll see when you arrive.’”

Blanco, 37, shared his perspective on Gomez’s poorly timed attitude as he tried to navigate the situation.

“She nearly didn't show up at all. She was expressing, ‘I don’t really feel well. I think I’m going to stay in today. Can’t we just reschedule the shoot for another time?’” he remembered. “And I was like, ‘Uhh…’ Trying to figure out how to proceed…”

The producer emphasized the amount of deception that usually accompanies a proposal — something he found particularly challenging at that moment.

“First off, getting engaged is the most surreal experience ever,” Blanco stated. “It’s like, just before you tell someone that you’ll be connected to them forever, they say, ‘Prove to me how well you can deceive.’ It’s the toughest… She was upset with me because I had been telling some poor lies the day before.”

The couple made their engagement public at the end of 2024 after dating for over a year.

“Forever starts now,” Gomez captioned a social media post on December 11, featuring a photo of her engagement ring.

Blanco also celebrated this significant occasion by commenting, “Hey wait… that’s my wife.”

Since then, the couple hasn’t held back from publicly expressing their affection for each other.

In an interview with Interview magazine released on Valentine’s Day last month, they took turns praising one another.

“You know when you feel you've found the right person and you think, ‘Oh my God.’ But it feels even more extraordinary,” Blanco expressed to the magazine. “From the moment we started hanging out, I thought, ‘This is my wife.’ I was telling my mom, ‘This is the girl I’m going to marry.’”

Gomez echoed his sentiments, saying that she was the one who developed feelings first.

“It was truly effortless. We entered the studio to create a song, and we simply conversed; that’s how straightforward it was for me. I had feelings for him even before he had any for me,” she remarked.
