Elton John has been a significant advocate for Chappell Roan long before she gained widespread recognition — so it was only fitting that during his Oscar gathering on Sunday, March 2, the 77-year-old musical icon shared the stage with his favorite pop sensation.
Roan, who is 27 years old, headlined the 33rd Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party. Not only did she perform tracks from her album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess to a lively crowd, but she also teamed up with John for a charming version of her popular song, “Pink Pony Club.”
Although John, who ended his touring career in 2023, remained seated for much of the performance, he demonstrated that he still possesses some dancing skills. In one particularly sweet moment, Roan gently placed the star’s pink cowboy hat back on his head after it slipped off.
During the event held in West Hollywood Park, John introduced Roan to the attendees by calling her “one of the biggest stars in the world right now, quite rightly so.” He shared his excitement upon discovering her, expressing that he “freaked out” the first time he heard her music. “I immediately wanted to feature her on the program. She came, I interviewed her, and I fell in love with her and her album,” he recounted, according to Billboard. “I’ve tried to be her friend and have had many conversations with her.” He also acknowledged how she “not only communicates with her voice on stage, but also off stage in an honest and beautiful manner,” before adding, “You’re the best, baby. I love you so much.”
At this glamorous annual gathering hosted by John and his partner David Furnish, with this year’s co-hosts including Jean Smart, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Neil Patrick Harris, and David Burtka, Roan also performed a duet of John’s ballad, “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” and offered her rendition of his classic, “Your Song,” which she dedicated to her parents, who were present.
With tears in her eyes, Roan expressed her gratitude to John for his belief in her music. “He played it first, y’all,” she said, wiping away a tear as she held onto the star’s hand. “I am so thankful that you invited me here. You’ve dedicated so much to the queer community, allowing me to become the artist I am today.”
Earlier, Furnish informed Variety that John's connection with Roan is long-standing. “He was as early an adopter as one could be to her talent,” he mentioned. “Since then, she’s become a beloved friend to both Elton and me. He keeps track of her and is thrilled with what she has accomplished musically.”
