Katie Gaudreau is a caring aunt to her late brother Matthew’s child, Tripp.
"Tripp Matthew. 🤍🦋," Katie wrote alongside a picture of her cradling baby Tripp — a child born to Matthew’s widow, Madeline, in December — which she shared on Instagram on Saturday, February 1.
"I will love you forever and always. We are incredibly fortunate to have our little bit of heaven here. Each day, you resemble your dad more and more. No words can truly capture how deeply I cherish you 🤍," Katie added in her post.
Madeline welcomed her and Matthew’s first child following the tragic passing of her husband in August 2024, just a day prior to Katie’s wedding. “Tripp Matthew 🤍🦋,” Madeline shared on Instagram on Sunday, December 29, introducing her newborn. “Mommy & Daddy’s world.” Her post featured a photo of Madeline holding the little one’s tiny hand, along with a small sign that stated, “He’s here.” She also tagged Matthew in the message.
Both Matthew and his brother, NHL player Johnny Gaudreau, were tragically killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bikes near their hometown in New Jersey in August. Matthew was just 29 years old, while Johnny was 31.
Madeline and Matthew had been together for nearly 15 years and were married for three years before his sudden passing.
In September 2024, a pregnant Madeline delivered a heartfelt eulogy for her husband at a memorial service held in his honor. "This past week has felt like living in a nightmare from which I cannot escape," Madeline expressed. "I feel numb, furious, sorrowful, and grateful all at the same time. Some days, the thought of this new reality is overwhelming, but what I mostly feel is the absence of Matt."
With tears in her eyes, Madeline conveyed her belief that "Matt will be with his son every moment of his life." She added, "I’m so grateful to God for blessing us with a child, a little Matty, who will carry on his legacy. Tripp will know just how much his father adored him, and I promise to engage in all the activities we envisioned together."
