Actor Dolph Lundgren, 68, revealed in his new memoir, Fights Worth Fighting: Finding Strength in Struggle, published Tuesday, September 22, 2026, that he contemplated medically assisted suicide during the height of his physical and mental suffering from cancer treatment.
The Rocky IV star disclosed that he and his brother, Johan, discussed traveling to a country where assisted suicide for terminally ill patients is legal, such as Switzerland, due to concerns over his declining condition and potential inability to complete the process independently. However, the discussions ceased after Lundgren began receiving targeted medical care that improved his health outlook.
Medical Reevaluation and Breakthrough Treatment
Lundgren's health journey began in 2015 when doctors first diagnosed and surgically removed a kidney tumor. In 2020, medical teams discovered additional tumors, leading to two years of ineffective treatments.
The turn in his prognosis occurred when a revised medical evaluation identified a specific genetic mutation within his cancer cells.
"What she found was that my 'kidney cancer' cells had a mutation that is fairly common in lung cancer," Lundgren wrote, explaining why previous treatments had failed. "That’s why the medications I had been given for the past two years weren’t working."
Following the diagnosis adjustment and the implementation of a revised care plan under Dr. Drakaki, Lundgren's condition improved significantly. In November 2024, the actor announced that he was cancer-free.
