Ryan Lochte Responds After Ex-Wife Kayla Rae Reid Slams Fiancée Molly Gillihan Online

Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte has addressed an ongoing public dispute involving his ex-wife, Kayla Rae Reid, and his fiancée, Molly Gillihan, following social media commentary regarding the former couple's children. On Monday, October 19, the 42-year-old athlete spoke out exclusively to clarify the situation, emphasizing that while he and his partner miss and love the children very much, they cannot control the narrative that Reid has allegedly created over the past year.

The online conflict escalated after Gillihan participated in an Instagram question-and-answer session, where a follower inquired whether Lochte sees his kids—9-year-old son Caiden, 7-year-old daughter Liv Rae, and 3-year-old daughter Georgia June—given that the Olympian lives in Springfield, Missouri, while the children reside with their mother in Florida. Gillihan responded that Lochte visits with them every month and noted plans for the children to spend Christmas break, spring break, and the majority of the summer with them, though she added that it still feels insufficient and expressed hope that the separation is temporary.

Reid swiftly pushed back against the statements via her Instagram Story on Monday, disputing the custody schedule detailed by Gillihan. The model asserted that the children stay with their father for only one month out of a two-and-a-half-month summer break and stated that holiday custody is divided equally between the parents. Accusing Gillihan of a desperate bid for public attention, Reid stated that she wishes to be excluded from commentary and claimed she handles the overwhelming majority of parenting responsibilities and financial provisions for the children almost entirely on her own. Furthermore, Reid criticized Gillihan for selectively presenting facts and questioned her boundaries and respect, referencing previous relationships and expressing embarrassment over the situation before declaring that she has no interest in participating in a public circus.

In response to the backlash, Lochte confirmed that he removed a previous social media post in which he had defended Gillihan and urged Reid to leave him and his children alone. Writing via his Instagram Story on Monday, the Olympian explained that even while attempting to defend his fiancée, Gillihan was actively looking out for his peace and mental health by asking him to delete the post.

Lochte urged the public to recognize the severe effects of smear campaigns, public shaming, and online bullying, recalling his own profound mental health struggles following the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he faced local authorities over a false armed robbery report that resulted in dismissed charges. Highlighting that mental health and lives truly matter, the 12-time Olympic medalist pleaded for the online bullying to cease.

The complex family dynamics trace back to earlier milestones following the breakdown of Lochte and Reid's marriage. Reid separated from the swimmer in March 2025 and subsequently accused Gillihan, whom she identified as an acquaintance, of having an overlap with Lochte during the marriage, though Lochte denied any relationship overlap. Just four months after Reid publicized their impending divorce, Lochte proposed to Gillihan in October 2025, and the former couple's official divorce was ultimately granted in July 2026.
