Taylor Swift reflected on her career during an interview released Monday, August 24, revealing that she felt "washed up" and believed she was "aging out of the music industry" when she was just 22 years old.
Speaking during "The Icon Sessions With Taylor Swift: A 20-Year Retrospective," hosted by the Recording Academy's Songwriters & Composers Wing, the 36-year-old Grammy winner discussed the emotional background behind her song "Nothing New." Written during the original 2012 Red era, the track was eventually left off the initial album before being recorded as a collaboration with singer Phoebe Bridgers for the 2021 rerecording, Red (Taylor's Version).
Swift explained that the process of rerecording her music amid a dispute over her master recordings with Scooter Braun allowed her to revisit tracks left on the cutting room floor. She noted that some of those unreleased songs resonated with her even more years later.
Reflecting on the mindset that led to writing "Nothing New," Swift recalled thinking she was boring and that people were over her at age 22. She described those feelings as a passing thought and a sad night with a bottle of wine, which made her understand why the track was initially excluded from Red. However, when she revisited the song around age 30 for the rerecording, she felt the lyrics hit home.
Looking Back at 'Tim McGraw'
During the career retrospective, Swift also examined her 2006 debut single, "Tim McGraw," stating that the track contained hints of what would unfold over the next two decades of her career.
Swift highlighted the opening line referencing "Georgia stars," admitting she had never visited Georgia when she wrote the lyric. She explained that the line was crafted to build a character and paint a narrative picture that immediately grounds the listener in the story. Describing "Tim McGraw" as a time-machine song, Swift noted that it jumps forward in time while simultaneously inviting the listener to reflect back.
