'Chicago Fire' Secures Taylor Kinney’s Return Amid Major Behind-the-Scenes Shakeups

As Chicago Fire undergoes a wave of major cast and creative departures heading into Season 15, the fate of one core mainstay is now officially locked in.

Original star Taylor Kinney has signed a new agreement to continue leading the hit NBC procedural as Lieutenant Kelly Severide. The 45-year-old actor was the last primary cast member to wrap up contract negotiations following the general renewal of the One Chicago universe.

Securing the Lead After Previous Absence

The contract extension keeps an original pillar at Firehouse 51. Having been with the drama since its 2012 debut, the actor previously took a temporary leave of absence during Season 11 in January 2023 to attend to a personal matter.

On screen, his character's brief exit was explained through an assignment assisting an arson investigation training program in Alabama. He subsequently rejoined the main cast for Season 12.

On-Screen and Behind-the-Scenes Departures

The veteran actor's return arrives at a pivotal transitional moment for the procedural. Veteran actor Joe Miñoso is departing the series, though he is scheduled to appear in a select number of Season 15 episodes to resolve his character's storyline.

Additionally, Dermot Mulroney—who joined as Chief Dom Pascal—is set to exit early in the upcoming season following a brief appearance in the Season 14 finale.

The series is also undergoing a structural leadership transition. Longtime showrunner Andrea Newman stepped down in April after serving with the production across all 14 seasons. Co-executive producer Victor Teran has stepped into the showrunner role.

"Working at Chicago Fire, with the absolute best cast and crew in the business, has been the highlight of my career," Newman shared in a departure statement, adding that the team "will always feel like home".

Executive producer Peter Jankowski praised Newman's foundational contributions, noting that the show "thrived under her watch" while expressing confidence in Teran's leadership moving forward.
